Did just the same thing (start anew) when I switched to Gmail from Thunderbird.

It is good to start anew but I know many people has years worth of email that they want to bring along.

In my entire email history, I left behind the mail archive 3 times. Each time I hardly go back to the archive. Yet I still want to bring along the archive if I migrate again.

I also made this switch quite some time ago. After fiddling around a bit, I decided on the best solution: export all mail, archive it in a zip and burn it to disc. Then, start fresh with a clean installation of thunderbird ;)

It's the least hassle, and sometimes it's good to leave all your old e-mail behind and start anew. Only the most important e-mails I saved seperately.
